Karamoja sub-region, commonly known as Karamoja, is a region in Uganda. It covers an area of 27,528km and comprises Kotido District, Kaabong District, Karenga District,
Nabilatuk District Abim District, Moroto District, Napak District and Nakapiripirit District.
The region is projected to have a population of 1.4 million in 2022 by UBOS.[1]
More than half a million people are going hungry in Karamoja, approximately 40 percent of the population of this neglected, long-suffering rural region between South Sudan and Kenya.

Natural disasters, plagues of locusts and armyworms, and raids by heavily armed cattle thieves have left little to eat.

Irrespective of the challenges faced, the region has continued to grow in population,
infrastructural development, the discoveries of minerals like gold, etc. This is attracting people from across the Nation, many settlements in the districts of Abim, Kotido and Napak and this is affecting the culture of the region as cultures interact with each other.

This has affected church growth both positively and negatively. Worthy to note as we bring the above information into perspective of church growth in Karamoja is that Karamoja’s population is growing at a very high speed. e.g.

In 2017 Karamoja had a population of 12 million people compared to the current 14 million. This
growth in population comes as a challenge for the church as far as growth is concerned.

Karamoja PAG Map
For the past years, Karamoja Pastorate kept on receiving missionaries from Teso, Lango, PAG National office, and other visiting missionaries.
The challenges that these missionaries took upon themselves led to planting churches and establishing local autonomous congregations of practicing Christians in the region. Up to 2006 when the churches in Karamoja received the pastorate status, there were five assemblies and twenty-seven churches in the region.
